The Lily Inn

History

This charming building dates back to 1709. Built on land originally deeded by Charles II to William Penn on March 1, 1676, the land was then bought by Thomas Budd on November 14, 1693. On April 29, 1709, Francis Smith built a two-story house next to his brother, Daniel Smith. In 1776 Samuel Allinson makes one house out of these two homes. The building passed though successive owners when in 1800 Lydia Richie inherited the house. Her father, Thomas Richie, was a prominent Philadelphia merchant who also owned salve ships. Slave ships regularly docked in Burlington to avoid a ‘head’ tax imposed on the slave trade to discourage slavery by the Philadelphia Quakers. In 1857 J. Howard Pugh, a prominent physician, acquired the old home of Samuel Allinson. Dr. Pugh substantially changed the old building, including the addition of a third story. On October 31, 2007, the current owners, Eugenia & Murray Sonstein purchased the building with the purpose of creating Burlington’s first bed and breakfast. The Lily opened for business in March 2009 and it continues to welcome travelers from around the globe today!
